And though the duo were quick to dispel any rumours of new material – admitting the reformation is a “pure nostalgia thing” – they’ve also been swift to allay any disappointment by delivering fresh Mars Volta material. Sixth studio album, Noctourniquet, finds El Paso’s premiere prog-metallers on predictably bonkers form, referencing Greek myths and nursery rhymes, while tempering their preposterous concepts with colossal choruses. It all makes for thrillingly accessible listening.
