7digital What we said: Mumford & Sons ditching the banjos might not be as earth-shattering an event as Dylan going electric, but it still sent sizeable tremors through their loyal fan base. You can understand why: adored or abhorred, the banjo’s metallic twang was their biggest calling card, with close vocal harmonies and rousing choruses coming joint second. The question is, would you rather hear Babel part two, or something new? With help from Florence + The Machine-producer James Ford and The National’s Aaron Dessner, the quartet have opted for the braver option. And the result? Epic pop-rock, custom-designed for the enormodomes they’re already selling out worldwide.
