7digital What we said: Though fans have felt their absence keenly, there’s no question that Green Day had to take time out following 2012’s ¡Uno! ¡Dos! ¡Tré! trilogy. Struggling with substance abuse and feeling rudderless creatively, singer Billie Joe Armstrong sought treatment for his addiction to prescription medication, and gave himself breathing space to refocus. The trio’s 12th album is all the stronger for it. Variously tackling “narcissistic social media”, surveillance culture and the rising tide of violence in the USA – and featuring a title track inspired by Black Lives Matter protest – Revolution Radio finds the veteran punk-rockers politically-engaged and sounding totally revitalised.
